Toe nail fungus comes from nail polish???

I noticed my toe nails are turning a ablaze orange colour at the very very top so I asked some one from Sergio's Spa and she said it was a fungus. So I got that cream you put on twice a time... a acquaintance of mine said it was from nail polish, leaving it on too continued. I'm a very very clean person so I am not sure why this is current. :( Shoudl I throw outside all of my shoes and socks?
